Many Networks cover large areas in which most equipment including Ethernet Switches are placed in a distributed architecture. Maintaining security is a major concern as system integrators and outside consultants without proper authorization or a check of their computer for viruses, can plug into the internal networks. What may be considered a harmless quick connection to check the configuration of a connected device, can expose the entire network. It has been documented that the majority of infected networks happen from a computer connecting locally and not by an external Internet attack.
